Reporting to the Head of Engineering for the Core Stream, you will have the responsibility of creating synergy and empowering our engineering team to develop reliable, scalable, and commercially viable domain and supporting services for our modernised travel platform.

Critical to this role is proficiency in backend programming languages such as C# or Java, combined with deep expertise across the full lifecycle of backend services and APIs using cloud computing technologies and platforms. However, this position goes beyond being a technology expert.

What you'll get to do

  • You will be part of a small group of Senior Principal Engineers who play a pivotal role in defining and enhancing the "how" of our engineering craft at Serko.
  • Excellent leadership qualities and the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders across the organisation are essential. You should be highly skilled in leading complex and ambiguous programs or projects that have a significant impact on the organisation as a whole.
  • Collaborating closely with Architecture, Product, Engineering, and senior business leaders, you will contribute to shaping our product and technology strategy.

What you will bring

  • Deep functional experience building software systems in a product-led organisation.
  • Deep expert knowledge in the full lifecycle of backend services and APIs (designing, building, discoverability, documentation) using cloud computing technologies (we currently build our services in C# on Azure).
  • Deep experience in technical leadership and influencing an entire engineering group.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, influencing up to Senior Leadership audiences.
  • The ability to work with diverse individuals from different backgrounds, expertise, and professional and personal needs, driving alignment on product development and strategy in complex stakeholder environments to achieve high-impact business outcomes.
  • Deep experience designing and building software that is easily testable, observable, and scalable
  • Strong facilitation skills. Able to lead the design and workshopping sessions for large cross-team groups, bringing extensive domain understanding; clearly articulating technical outcomes and nuances.
  • Demonstrated experience building talent, capability and internal capacity for new technology, frameworks, and innovative practices in software engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience making careful engineering trade-offs, particularly around "Build vs Buy", evaluating potential third-party systems to partner with, and managing and working with vendors to meet our business needs.
